Meet Brenda Haynes!  She has lived in White County for the majority of her life. She has owned businesses here and has always considered it home. She and her husband, Gary, have been married for almost 30 years! Together, they have raised three wonderful children and now have five grandchildren. She says, “living at the gateway to the Appalachian Mountains is ingrained in who she is.”

Q: What do you do for a living and what do you like most about it?

My husband is a general contractor. I consider myself semi-retired; however, I enjoy putting a house together. I have been involved in the construction process with him for a number of years. Often, I find myself helping pick out paint colors, cabinets, flooring, and adding the finishing touches.

Q: What advice would you want to give or leave with people? Or , If you could go back in time to give yourself some wisdom, what would you say?

I am not smart enough to give advice. However, I can tell you that God first is the only way. Kindness matters. We all hear the negative words and actions that people throw at us on the daily. If we could just present the power of praise in that same context that could change everything about that person’s way of thinking. I would tell my younger self to value yourself, hold yourself to a higher standard and invest in yourself. Most importantly, know that you are worthy.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?

I have been to all 50 states and love exploring our own country. Traveling outside of the United States seems to be a bit more arduous.

Q: If you could choose anyone that is alive today and not a relative; with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would y’all meet for this lunch?

There isn’t just one person. I have girlfriends, and because everyone’s schedule is so contrasting, we may meet at Clyde’s for lunch or have been known to visit and support our local wineries in the area. Dog Hobble, Cavender Creek and Big Creek are among our favorite local spots!

Q: What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in our community?

We frequent Clyde’s on the square for lunch as well as Corner Grill and the Soda Fountain Cafe.

Q: How long have you lived or worked in our community?

My first husband and I came to Cleveland in the mid 80’s and purchased Cleveland Cleaners from Dub and BJ Ash. We operated it for a number of years! Again in 2002, I opened and operated a restaurant in town for some 17 years. I mostly enjoyed fellowshipping with my community as well as the tourists!

Q: Who, in our community, do you think is happy and positive and would be a great next interview for this project? This person will be your nomination!

Brenda Helton is a lady I have always admired. She is a strong and independent lady who is intelligent and dedicated to her family and community. She would make a great FFWC!

Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?

What I love about White County is the sense of peace and safety. Living in the gateway to the Appalachian Mountains is just ingrained in who I am. We have all walked different roads but they all seem to converge into a sense of home here.
